If your pops is local and you want something simple and fun, I’d recommend you take him a ticket on a ¾ day boat. It’ll probably go to Catalina or wherever they’re biting. I took my dad a couple years ago and he’s never worked on his birthday since.

He’ll catch mostly calico bass, rock fish, maybe a tuna of some sort (the occasional albacore or possible yellowtail. I’d recommend Dana Wharf Sportfishing out of Dana Point (http://www.danawharfsportfishing.com/). You can buy him a ticket online. Most of the other usual fishing outlets up further north (Davey’s Locker and Newport Landing) don’t seem to be running much this time of year. Any of these places will be able to rent him a rod or sell him a license if he doesn’t have one.

i'll let you know what my sibs and i end up bookin' for him. in the meantime, i hear that you're headed up to Arrowhead with your fam and Chris! have a fab time... we'll all have to go to happy hour when you guys get back. :)
